Nigeria has been thrown into mourning today following the announcement of the death of former President Muhammadu Buhari, GCFR. According to a brief statement signed by his longtime aide and former presidential spokesperson, Garba Shehu, the former head of state passed away this afternoon in a private clinic in London, United Kingdom.
The statement reads:
“The family of the former president has announced the passing on of the former president, Muhammadu Buhari, GCFR, this afternoon in a clinic in London.
May Allah accept him in Aljannatul Firdaus, Amin.
Signed,
Garba Shehu
13-07-25”
Buhari, who served as Nigeria’s president from 2015 to 2023, was aged 81. He had a long and storied career in Nigerian public service, rising from the military ranks to become Head of State in 1983 through a coup, and later returning to power via the ballot box in 2015 — becoming the second Nigerian to rule both as a military and civilian leader.
His time in office was marked by major national challenges, including a sluggish economy, persistent security crises, and spirited anti-corruption efforts. Though praised by some for infrastructural strides and social investment programs, Buhari’s administration was also heavily criticized for issues such as inflation, debt accumulation, and widespread insecurity.
After leaving office in May 2023, Buhari retired to his hometown in Daura, Katsina State, but had since been traveling occasionally for health check-ups abroad.
Leaders across the political spectrum, former allies, critics, and global figures are expected to pay tribute in the coming hours.
Funeral arrangements are yet to be announced by the family.
May Allah grant him eternal rest in Aljannatul Firdaus. Amin.
