Liverpool Forward Diogo Jota and Brother Killed in Tragic Car Accident in Spain

Portuguese international and Liverpool striker Diogo Jota, 28, and his brother André Filipe da Silva, 26—who played for FC Penafiel—tragically lost their lives in a car crash near Zamora, Spain, on July 3, 2025  . Their Lamborghini veered off the A‑52 motorway shortly after midnight following a suspected tyre blowout; the vehicle burst into flames, killing them instantly  .


Jota had recently celebrated his marriage to long-time partner Rute Cardoso and was a father of three  . Since joining Liverpool from Wolves in 2020, he had made 182 appearances, scoring 65 goals, and helped the team secure the Premier League, FA Cup, and EFL Cup  . Internationally, he earned 49 caps and 14 goals for Portugal, contributing to two UEFA Nations League titles  .

Tributes from across the football world have flooded in. The Portuguese Football Federation described Jota as “an extraordinary person, with a contagious joy” and requested a minute of silence at the Women’s Euros game between Portugal and Spain  . Prominent figures like Gary Neville and UK government representatives also expressed deep sorrow  .
