Portuguese international and Liverpool striker Diogo Jota, 28, and his brother André Filipe da Silva, 26—who played for FC Penafiel—tragically lost their lives in a car crash near Zamora, Spain, on July 3, 2025  . Their Lamborghini veered off the A‑52 motorway shortly after midnight following a suspected tyre blowout; the vehicle burst into flames, killing them instantly  .

Jota had recently celebrated his marriage to long-time partner Rute Cardoso and was a father of three  . Since joining Liverpool from Wolves in 2020, he had made 182 appearances, scoring 65 goals, and helped the team secure the Premier League, FA Cup, and EFL Cup  . Internationally, he earned 49 caps and 14 goals for Portugal, contributing to two UEFA Nations League titles  .

Tributes from across the football world have flooded in. The Portuguese Football Federation described Jota as “an extraordinary person, with a contagious joy” and requested a minute of silence at the Women’s Euros game between Portugal and Spain  .
