More than 10 people have been killed and many others injured during the peaceful demonstrations. Although the unit was disbanded, barely 48 hours later, a new unit was formed under a different name, Special Weapons and Tactics (SWAT) which would be occupied by members of the SARS unit. Nigerians continued protesting and more peaceful protesters were killed especially in the Lekki Toll Gate shooting which occurred on October 20, 2020 after street lights and CCTV cameras were cut.

Nigerian and Manchester United striker, Odion Ighalo has called for change and said he is ashamed of the Nigerian government for killing their own citizens.

In a tweet after his club’s victory over PSG, Ighalo had the following to say:

“The Nigerian government, you guys are a shame to the world for killing your own citizens, sending military to the streets to kill unarmed protesters because they are protesting for their own rights? It’s uncalled for.

“You people will be remembered in history as the first government to send the military to the city to start killing their own citizens. I am ashamed of this government, we are tired of you guys and we can’t take this anymore.”

The video has been shared to millions of people by teammate, Marcus Rashford and former United defender, Rio Ferdinand.

“They will keep killing if the world doesn’t talk about this,” added Ighalo.
