Residents, members of All Progressives Congress (APC) and Action Democratic Congress (ADC) clashed with some members of an APC factional group in Igbara-Oke, Ifedore Local Government Area of Ondo State trooped to the street protecting the announcement of APC candidate as the winner of the re-run councillorship election in Igbara-Oke Ward 1.
The councillorship seat of the Ward 1 had remained vacant since last year when the local council elections were held as there was a crisis over the candidate presented by APC, who was said to be an Osun State indigene.
The Ondo State Independent Electoral Commission (ODIEC) was said to have conducted the re-run election on Wednesday in the three remaining wards, two in Akure North Local Government Area and the other one in Ifedore Local Government Area.
But the election was said to have been stalled by the natives of Igbara-Oke, including members of APC, when officials of the electoral commission came with inadequate voting materials.
The natives were said to have chased away the ODIEC officials and the election did not hold.
Crisis broke out on Thursday evening when the state electoral commission allegedly announced the APC candidate, Kehinde Lawal, as the winner of the election that allegedly did not hold.
Youths of the community went into the street, protesting the announcement of the APC candidate as the winner of the election.
It took the intervention of the state Security Network otherwise known as Amotekun Corps to quell the crisis.
According to the state Publicity Secretary of ADC, Eniola Olurotimi alleged that out of the 26 units in the Ward 1, voting materials were supplied only in 9 units which made the people prevent voting.
He said: “This scenario was repel by all the citizen of Igbara-Oke Town. Mr Ropo Omopariola, who is the Electoral Officer in Ifedore LGA, absconded when it was discovered that the issue at hand needed explanations.
Another ugly development came up on Thursday 11th, 2021 where ADC members were attacked and left many with gun wounds.
ADC as a Party wish to plead to the Chairman of ODIEC in Ondo State, Professor Dinakin to see to this political abnormalities and declare another date for a re-run election in Igbara-Oke Ward 1 of Ondo State.”
A chieftain of ADC in the local government, Hon. Gbenga Fapounda condemned the action of ODIEC, describing it as a conspiracy against the wish of the people.
He explained that the ruling APC-led government in the state should realise that it’s not compulsory that it must win all political seats, but rather should allow the wish of the people to prevail in a democratic dispensation.
Effort to get in touch with the state Publicity Secretary of APC, Alex Kalejaye proved abortive as his mobile line was not connecting and there was no reply to a message sent to him as at the time of filing this report.
Likewise, ODIEC PRO, Rotimi Olorunfemi, neither picked phone calls nor replied text message sent to his mobile phone.
