Police arrest DAILY POST Osun reporter for covering End SARS protest

Sikiru Obarayese, DAILY POST correspondent in Osun State has been arrested while covering the EndSARS protest in Osogbo, the capital.

Obarayese and others were manhandled and taken in custody as the police dispersed demonstrators.

The protesters had marched from the Ita-Olokan area through Oja-Oba, Station road, Post Office, Old Garage and Oke-Fia before they were interrupted.

Obarayese is to be charged to court despite identifying himself.

Commissioner of Police, Wale Olokode, said he heard about the situation and had directed the withdrawal of the case.

Public Relations Officer, Yemisi Opalola confirmed that efforts were on to free the reporter.

Opalola, however, claimed that Obarayese refused to leave the scene when police ordered everyone to go away.

The spokesperson assured DAILY POST that he would be released as the commissioner was on top of the matter.

The Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) leadership in Osun has condemned the development.

A state government official expressed dismay about the overzealousness of the policemen.

“Obarayese identified himself. The attempt to emasculate journalists is an aberration”, he fumed.

At the Lekki toll gate in Lagos, security operatives arrested and brutalized  protesters and an Uber driver.
