Bauchi residents groan over high cost of cooking gas, food items

Bauchi residents have lamented the soaring price of Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG), also known as cooking gas.

DAILY POST had recently reported how high prices of foodstuffs are pushing the residents to untold hardship, including staple foods like maize, millet, among others, virtually on daily basis.

Findings in Bauchi metropolis revealed that the price of cooking gas had gone up, making it difficult for many to buy, while many others were resorting to other alternatives, like firewood and charcoal, to cook.

It was gathered that cooking gas, which was sold at the rate of between N380 and N400 per kilogramme, depending on where it was being bought, is now being sold at N500.

With the increase, a 12kg cylinder now cost N6,000 as against N4,800 it used to be. A 3kg cylinder now goes for N1,500, which is an increment of N300 to the N1,200 or less it was sold recently, while 5kg cylinder is now N2,500.

An official at one of the gas depots, Nokson Gas Company, who pleaded not to be named, told our correspondent that the increase in price was necessitated by the crisis in Jos, the Plateau State capital, among other factors, leading to increase in cost of transportation, adding that this would be passed on to the consumer eventually.

According to him, “The vehicles conveying liquefied petroleum gas to Bauchi here come from Warri, Delta State and Port Harcourt in Rivers State. They have to pass through Jos before coming to Bauchi.

“But with the current crisis in Jos, they now have to detour and take long routes before reaching here.

This, no doubt, means they have to spend more money to transport the commodity to Bauchi and this will be added to the price we are buying.

As the price increases, we too have to add to the price of selling. That is why you notice that the price has gone up a bit,” the official said.
