44-Year-Old Woman Gives Birth to Septuplets in Abuja

A 44-year-old woman has given birth to a set of septuplets at the University of Abuja Teaching Hospital, Gwagwalada. Unfortunately, two of the babies died post birth due to some complications, but the remaining quintuplets are stable and healthy.

The Chief Medical Director said while the babies are healthy enough, a lot more is needed to keep them alive. He also revealed this is the first time multiple births of such a number has happened and the management is doing all it takes to ensure both the mother and quintuplets stay healthy.

The babies were born pre-term at about 30 weeks. A team of three consultant surgeons, eight paediatricians, and about eight nurses took part in the 1-hour surgery.

The 44-year-old woman and her husband are said to have not had a child for 10 years after the birth of their first child before giving birth to the set of septuplets.

The consultant paediatrician in charge also reiterated his words saying the babies are quite stable, but a lot more is still needed to keep them alive.

“The surgery actually went on without complications because all hands were on ground; the experienced hands. The surgery, caesarean section ordinarily is a low-risk surgery; it’s not a very big surgery,” she said.

We need enough incubators; we need things like infusion pump. All the things we are using in the unit should be sterilized within the unit, she said. She also listed other very expensive things needed to keep the babies healthy and alive.

As they were born prematurely, the set of quintuplets have a body weight ranging from 1.35kg to as low as 0.85kg.
