WIZKID AT 30: WHO IS NIGERIA’S NEXT STARBOY?

Ayodeji Ibrahim Balogun or Starboy as we fondly know him is now 30. Indeed it seems like a fortnight ago when he broke into the Nigerian music industry under his then boss, Banky W.

It is not far-fetched to say he could be the greatest Nigerian artiste of all time till date. Wizkid is not only locally recognised here in Africa but the global world recognises his talent. With countless collaboration with global superstars like Drake, Nicki Minaj, Skepta and so on, at 30 he is still far from done.

Although there is still more time on his hands, nothing less than 10 years to be honest but it is worth asking who amongst all the young and upcoming artistes can follow in his footpath?

Whatever profession in our world today, staying consistent is very important and not everyone can stay at the top of their game for so long. As much as it is beautiful at the top, it is difficult to get there but even more difficult to stay there.

With 3 studio albums (Starboy, Ayo and the soon to be Made in Lagos) as well as countless blockbuster singles, we can only imagine what more Starboy has for us over the next couple of years.

Now 30, he is indeed no longer a ‘kid’ or ‘boy’ as we call him. He is now the MACHALA of the Nigerian Music industry and we are proud of him.

Away from him, several up and coming artistes have shown promises over the years and also recently. While it seems that Wizkid himself plans to hand over the mantle to his newly signed artiste, Starboy Terri, there are a couple of artistes out here who are equally talented and will be worthy challengers.

Being Nigeria’s biggest musician is not for everyone and while Wizkid has worn the crown with effortless panache, he is 30 years old now. Who is Nigeria’s next starboy?

While there are so many talents out there, there is only one throne.

FIREBOY DML

Few know him as Adedamola Adefolahan but hut Fireboy’s talents put him in good stead to wear the crown. He is however 24 years old and we remember Wizkid breaking into the music industry at a way younger age than that. That means little when you are talented and consistent though. Talent-wise, there is no doubt Fireboy is loaded. However, consistency will be measured by how much he can keep giving us the fire music he is known for.

He already has his first studio Album despite not being in the game for long yet and it was a massive hit. Laughter, Tears and Goosebumps (LTG) is a quality album that will stay on for decades and be evergreen. Every single song on the album is quality and he has done well after the release with a couple of other songs released as well as more projects coming up.

It is obviously in Fireboy’s hands if he would be able to replace Starboy at the pinnacle.

MAYORKUN

Davido’s understudy, Mayorkun is also a one who could be a global star. Although already 26, his talents are evident. He is also a made artiste already and unlike the others on this list, he already has a stable career. But who says he can’t be better? Who knows, he could just secure that big collaboration that launches him into greatness.

Up to something, Mama, Of Lagos, Geng etc and so on are just some of his blockbusters.

REMA

Even before Barrack Obama put Rema’s ‘Iron Man’ in his 2019 summer playlist, his talents were already evident. Divine Ikubor popularly known as Rema is signed to Mavin Records and his also one for the future. Like Fireboy, he hardly has any bad songs with Beamer, Ginger me, Dumebi and the just released Woman topping music charts.

Asides Obama, Popular American singer Rihanna went live on Instagram while jamming to his music. Footballers like Odion Ighalo, Eric Bailly and Paul Pogba have also been seen listening too while he was also a guest artiste at last year’s NBA games.

He is definitely set for the top and he just clocked 20 this year. The future is definitely bright and if he can keep this up, it is only a matter of time before he becomes the new Machala.

JOEBOY

Another very talented young musician, Joseph Akinfenwa Donus known popularly as Joeboy could be our next Starboy. He may not have the reputation of Fireboy or Rema yet but he’s certainly on the path.

Don’t Call me Back, Beginning, All for you and so on are some of his hit songs and he is worth taking a closer look at. He definitely is set for the top, whether as Wizkids’s successor or just another big musician in the Nigerian Music Industry.

These are undoubtedly the biggest young musicians in the industry right now. However they are not the only ones. Honourable mention go to Omah Lay who definitely also stands a chance of making it in the music industry if he remains consistent.

Omah Lay

Others are Oxlade, Diamond Jimma, Starboy Terri and so on. There are many talents in the Nigerian music industry and while this analysis may not list all, one thing is clear – the future is bright for the industry.

Oxlade

Who of these do you think has the chance of being our next Machala and Starboy? Or in fact, do you think the artiste’s name is not part?

Who ever you think is, we wish Wizkid a Happy Birthday and only hope he keeps bringing us joy and nothing but joy.
