Aisha Buhari is who most people know as President Buhari’s wife. While that is true, not everyone is aware of the fact that there used to be a woman named Safinatu Buhari. She was a trained teacher and the former Head of State’s late wife who was also Nigeria’s first lady between 1983 and 1985 during her husband’s first stint in power.

Here are some facts you may not have known about Buhari’s late wife and their marriage together.

  1. Birth and Career

Safinatu Buhari was born to Alhaji Yusuf Mani and Hajia Hadizatu Mani in 1952 in Jos, Plateau State. According to Fulani News Media, she obtained a Grade 2 certificate at Women Teachers College (WTC) Katsina in 1971.

  1. Her Relationship with Buhari

Safinatu met Buhari when she was just 14 years old. Buhari was in the Nigerian Army when they met and had accompanied his late friend, General Shehu Musa Yar’adua to see Safinatu’s father.

  1. Marriage

When the Nigerian civil war ended in 1970, Muhammadu Buhari and Safinatu got married a year later in December 1971 when Safinatu was 18 years old.

Buhari’s marriage with his ex-wife provided four children, all of whom are girls.

  1. Their Marriage Ended

According to City People, Buhari ended his marriage with Safinatu when he was released from incarceration. The reason for the decision was not stated, but it is generally believed it was due to Safinatu disobeying her husband’s instruction to stay far from the Babangida family.

It was Ibrahim Babangida who toppled Buhari’s government in a coup, putting Buhari in detention. While in detention, Buhari reportedly warned Safinatu to steer clear of his jailer’s family. However, it was Safinatu’s relationship with the Babangida family that helped her cope with her life and also facilitated her husband’s release.

  1. Safinatu Diagnosed with Diabetes

The ex-first lady was diagnosed with diabetes in 1998 and died 8 years later from the illness on January 14, 2006.
