Burna Boy Dedicates BET Award Performance to Victims of SARS

Burna Boy has dedicated his stunning BET Award performance to the victims of the Special Anti-Robbery Squad SARS).

The award ceremony was held on October 28, 2020 following the announcement of nominations on September 29, 2020. It featured award wins for American rappers, Megan Thee Stallion and Roddy Rich who won big with three and two awards respectively.

However, for Nigerians, Burna Boy stole the BET Award show with a rich performance of his ‘Monsters You Made’ song off his recently released Twice as Tall Album.

The Grammy-nominee performed his song with Coldplay frontman, Chris Martin. The song was originally written to show how corruption and bad governance causes seeds of discord among citizens which later become acts of negativity and violence.

The Nigerian artiste dedicated the performance to “All innocent Nigerians killed by SARS.” The full performance is here on Naijawide:

The music’s video was barely released few weeks back and it is from his album Twice as Tall which was also released this year.

Burna Boy has been a staunch criticism of the Special Anti-Robbery Squad which is a unit of the Nigerian Police Force that has been accused of extra-judicial killings, extortion, rape, and many atrocities.

There were recently nationwide and worldwide protests to end the unit with #EndSARS trending on social media for weeks. It ended with another brutal massacre of peaceful protesters at the Lekki Toll Gate.

Burna Boy is not the only artiste to have spoken out, he is joined by fellow African artistes, Wizkid, Davido, Runtown, among many other foreign celebrities who have spoken against Police brutality in the country.

At the BET Awards, there was a surprise appearance from America’s Vice Presidential candidate, Senator Kamala Harris.
